The Blood Sugar Test measures the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood. Glucose is your body’s main source of energy, but when levels are too high or too low, it can indicate health issues like diabetes, prediabetes or hypoglycaemia.

This test is done in two parts to give a complete picture of how your body manages sugar:
Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS):
Measured after 8–10 hours of fasting (no food, only water).
Shows your baseline blood sugar level.
Postprandial Blood Sugar (PPBS):
Measured 2 hours after eating a meal.
Helps check how your body processes sugar after food intake.

Why is the Test Done?
To diagnose diabetes or prediabetes
To monitor blood sugar control in diabetic patients
To check the effectiveness of medication, diet, or insulin therapy
To investigate symptoms such as:
Fatigue or weakness
Frequent urination
Excessive thirst or hunger
Unexplained weight loss
Blurred vision

Normal Blood Sugar Levels
Test Type Normal Range Borderline / Prediabetes Diabetes Level
Fasting (FBS) 70 – 99 mg/dL 100 – 125 mg/dL 126 mg/dL or higher
Postprandial (PPBS) Less than 140 mg/dL 140 – 199 mg/dL 200 mg/dL or higher

Values may slightly vary depending on the lab and testing method.

High Blood Sugar (Hyperglycaemia) May Indicate
Diabetes mellitus (Type 1 or Type 2)
Stress or infection
Cushing’s syndrome
Certain medications (e.g., steroids)

Low Blood Sugar (Hypoglycaemia) May Indicate
Excess insulin or diabetes medication
Skipping meals or fasting too long
